Manchester United were last night expecting a bid from West Ham United for midfielder Darren Fletcher, with West Bromwich Albion also in contention for a player who has only six months left on his contract at Old Trafford.
Fletcher has made only 16 appearances this season, despite having been given the United vice-captaincy, and Sam Allardyce wants to capitalise.
The West Ham manager had not expected a busy transfer window but may be set to make an opportunistic move for Fletcher.

The two Premier League sides face competition, though. Valencia have made a surprise inquiry and Celtic are also interested.
A link-up with West Bromwich might be the most appealing, as Fletcher could maintain his North-west base.
