Not so very long ago, the old Coach & Horses in the market was given the inevitable stripped-out gastropub treatment and, we feel it probably deserved it - the old pub was never up to much.
Now, the beer and food is good with real ale on the hand pumps, accompanied by a range of continentals such as Amstel and Paulaner. It is quite a comfy place with its settees, easy chairs and newspapers, the music is decent and there is a relaxed vibe - when it is not crowded. Although if it is warm enough you can always sit outside (now helped by heaters).
Prices are tourist high, which some may find off-putting but there are enough well-off locals to fill the place on a Saturday evening. Market days will see it packed with tourists and shoppers and on Friday and Saturday nights younger locals having a few pre-club drinks. Smokers, however, may find the place unappealing as it is strictly no-smoking even in the external section in the market.
