Anheuser-Busch aims to take over makers of Corona
11 April 2012
Brewing giant Anheuser-Busch has been in talks to buy Mexican Corona lager maker Grupo Modelo in a deal that could derail the $46.35 billion (£23.8 billion) takeover bid for the Budweiser brewer by InBev.
Anheuser-Busch already owns about 50% of Modelo and buying the other half may make the target too big for Stella Artois maker InBev.
Analysts said such a deal would not prove popular with shareholders. Faced with the prospect of either receiving a probable higher bid from InBev for their shares, or splashing out an extra $11 billion for Modelo, they are most likely to take the Belgians' cash, they said.
